On June 22nd, 1941, Adolf Hitler sent over 3,000 tanks and over three million German troops across the Soviet border into what would become one of the bloodiest, most barbaric wars the world would ever know.
Hitler’s invasion plan, Operation: Barbarossa, called for taking the northern Russian city of Leningrad in a matter of weeks. But as the troops reached the outside border of the city, the Soviet resistance stiffened and a stalemate ensued. Hitler called for continual bombardment of the city and cut off all outside supplies. He boasted that the city would starve to death and that the German forces would march into a ghost town.

city of Leningrad ran out of food. Every inhabitant would starve. One out of two would perish.

Leningrad would break the siege briefly through the "Road of Life" – a temporary road built on top of a
frozen lake.
